What are the famous madrasas in Mardin? How can you visit these madrasas?

Kasımiye Madrasa

The madrasa where is located in the central of Mardin is only 5 kilometers away from the central. So it is one of the most preferred touristic locations.

It is known that the madrasa started to be built in Artuqid  period. It has been actively serving as a place of worship since the 14th century. It refletcts the characteristics of  Artuqid structures. It is necessary to say that it is a structure that fascinates those who see it with its decorations, historical structures, courtyard and pool in the main iwan.

The construction of the Madrasa was started by the Artuqids and completed by the Akkoyunlus in the 15th century. So, the madrasa is called as  Sultan Kasım.

Zinciriye Madrasa

Zinciriye Madrasa is only 500 meter away from the central of city. It is estimated that the construction of the madrasa was made in 12th century. It  has a complex structure that includes a mosque, a tomb and additional structures. One of the prominent historical structures of Mardin, the madrasa is a structure worth seeing with its many details from its interior to its motifs, arched dome to rosettes and fountains. There is a tomb in the madrasa.

It was made by Melik Necmeddin Isa. He was the last Artuqid Sultan in 1385. So, the madrasa is called as “Sultan Isa”. It is believed that Sultan Isa  fought against Timur and his army and Sultan Isa was imprisoned in this madrasa. According to a rumor, the reason why it is called as Zinciriye Madrasa a chain used to be stretched between two sliced domes.

Shah Sultan Hatun Madrasa

It is known that this madrasa was built by the nephew of the Koyunlu Ruler. It is located in Tekke District.

Melik Mansur Madrasa

It is a Artuqid structure. It is used as amasjid in today. There are sarcophagus in the madrasa.

Hattuniye Madrasa

The Hatuniye Madrasah is also known by the name of Sitti Raziye. The construction of the madrasa was between 1176- 1184 years. Now, it is used as a mosque. It has th arthitectural features of 12th century.  It is a two-story, two-iwan, arcaded courtyard building. The sarcophagus in the madrasah make the building distinctive. The mihrab decorations in the main iwan reveal the rich stonework of the Artuqid period. Another important feature of the mosque is that the footprint accepted to belong to the Prophet Muhammad is found here.
