The Ancient City, Dara

The visitors of Dara Ancient city are growing

According to archaeological excavations, Dara is one of the most important place of ancient Mesopotamia. The distance  between Mardin and Dara is 30 kilometers. Dara extends to a large area. It seems that there are cave houses in there. It has still been  seen that there are churches, palaces, bazaaar, dungeons, water tanks and cisterns in the ruins of the city.

HISTORY

In 505, Emperor Anastasius got it built as a garrison city  to save the line of East of the Roma Empire. Anastasiopolis is its old name. Dara is the one of the most important center of trade. After the Persians captured Nusaybin, Dara Ancient city which is known as the effigy of the East became the line of Roma Empire.It was fortified by the Emperor Anastasius as an advanced border gate in the fifth century. Hundred years later, it passed into the hands of the Persians. The end of the century, it passed to the Abbasids. It also came under the rule of the Ottomans. The date of building of Dara has still been unknown.

Many tourists visit Dara every year. Especially, people who interested in historical events or nature research the history of Dara and gather information and photos.
